A communications device - wireless or wireline - cannot be replaced is correct. However, if you use wireless broadband, there are no airtime minutes attached to it. Therefore, you theoretically should be able to run all your calls over the VoIP service you choose. And, as noted elsewhere, you will be paying for broadband access only. Today, if you chose that option, it would cost you $60/mo for VZ Wireless broadband. . . other than that, you'd have no additional monthly wireless costs unless there were options such as text-messaging outside the capabilities of your VoIP provider.

This option, however, is unrealistic given the substantial packet loss that is even more likely to be encountered in slower wireless broadband. . . Bottom line, calls may be free via VoIP (and some services, too), but you have to pay someone for a broadband connection as noted elsewhere in our group blogosphere!
